A majority of the charity events we attend in New York cannot be described as a "rager" but Michael Capponi’s friends have learned to expect nothing less from Capponi, the real estate entrepreneur and a Miami nightlife icon.

Capponi for years has extravagantly been celebrating birthday parties to benefit charities, and while most of his annual celebrations are hosted in Miami, where he has tirelessly promoted a series of big nightclubs for decades, in a different fashion, he brings his 40th birthday celebration to New York.

Michael Capponi‘s friends, representing different parts of the nightlife fiasco industry, congregated at Capitale Friday with the aim of celebrating to raise money for Mr. Capponi’s charity- the Haiti Empowerment Mission. This charity is helping change Jacmel- a Haitian city that was ruined by the 2010 earthquake.

Capponi mission is to transform Jacmel into a flourishing tourist town. Capponi said that every year he tries to use birthday for charity, and he doesn’t think there is anyone else who does that.

He combines government people, models, and ambassadors. Capponi further added that the 40th birthday bash was kind of a mystical came-together, citing that unlike other birthdays that take months to produce, this one only took two weeks. He said that he thinks the entire of nonprofit socialite world is separated from nightlife community and this day was meant to combine that segregated world.

Shortly after Haiti’s earthquake, during the time when no commercial flights were allowed to fly there, Capponi travelled with a firefighter crew in order to survey the wreckage. He stumbled upon Jacmel- a city of tents at that time. It’s from that deeply hurt feeling from the look of the city which inspired Capponi to develop it into a kind of tourist destination one could find in Caribbean islands.

And, as a friend of Capponi, Dave Kennedy commented, Michael possesses a real gift- a thing he has nurtured over time, and that’s building community.
